Polyethylene tanks are made with a tank grade lineal low density polyethylene which is designed to expand and contract with the filling and emptying of the tank. It is imperative to not have any ribs in the weight bearing wall area. Incorporating ribs in a tank increase the tendency of the tank wall to have variations in wall thickness. If you have variations in weight bearing wall areas, using lineal lox density polyethylene that a thin area next to a thick area may expand 2 to 3 times more causing material fatigue and eventual failure. Think of polyethylene like a block of chocolate. Why do they have square segments when you take the wrapper off? So the chocolate may be broken more easily in the prescribed direction.
